Location: Remote (Global)
Employment Type: Contract / Partnership
Compensation: Profit Sharing Agreement (3.0%)
About the Position
Flawky Studios is seeking a highly skilled Visual Effects Artist to drive the atmosphere and impact of our unannouncedAction-RPG.
In an action game, the VFX artist is responsible for the “Game Feel.” You will work closely with the Lead Programmer and Combat Animator to ensure every sword swing connects with visceral impact. Beyond combat, you will be the visual architect of the game’s supernatural elements, visualizing the history of character through our unique narrative mechanics.
Key Responsibilities
1. Combat Visuals (The “Crunch”)
You are responsible for the visceral feedback of the combat system.
• Impacts: Design satisfying hit-sparks, blood spatters, and directional debris that give weight to attacks.
• Weapon Trails: Create stylized and realistic weapon trails that communicate the arc and speed of animations.
• Abilities: Design distinct visual languages for player abilities (Magic/Tech) and Enemy attacks (Telegraphed AOE markers, projectiles).
2. Narrative VFX (“Psychic Echoes”)
You will visualize the game’s unique storytelling mechanic.
• Echo Shaders: Create a specialized, high-fidelity “Ghost/Hologram” particle system and material shader to visualize 3D story reenactments (The Echoes) within the game world. These must look ethereal yet readable.
3. Atmospheric Systems (The Corruption)
You will drive the visual representation of the world’s changing state.
• Volumetric Atmosphere: Manipulate Volumetric Fog and Sky Atmosphere to create the “Dark Clouds” and oppressive mood that rolls in as the Corruption Meter rises.
• Environmental Particles: Create ambient effects (floating embers, dust motes, rain, corrupt spores) that bring static environments to life.
4. Technical Optimization
• Performance: rigorous management of particle counts and overdraw. You must ensure VFX run smoothly on target hardware without tanking the frame rate during heavy combat.
Qualifications
• Niagara Mastery: Deep proficiency with Unreal Engine 5 Niagara Systems (Module script creation is a plus).
• Shader Logic: Strong understanding of the Material Editor to create custom dissolve, panning, and distortion shaders.
• Artistic Eye: Understanding of Animation Principles (Timing, Anticipation) and Color Theory to ensure effects read clearly against the background.
• Optimization: Experience profiling GPU costs for particle systems.
Compensation & Partnership
This position is structured as a high-stake partnership.
• Profit Sharing: You will be awarded a legally binding share of 3.0% of the Game’s Net Profit following commercial release.
• Creative Attribution: Under our Idea Attribution Program, unique visual feedback ideas or atmospheric concepts you implement will be formally credited to you.
